While vertical photographs are less common than horizontal ones (they do require us to take the extra step of turning the camera sideways), they provide a great way to imitate the brain’s natural selective focus ability.

They help us capture vertical subjects like the spiral staircase above, help our subjects move vertically through the frame, or focus the viewer’s attention on a single subject by removing peripheral vision.
